New 2022 SsangYong Korando e-Motion: UK prices and specs revealed

New SsangYong Korando compact electric SUV is almost here, and will be available in Britain in three specifications

SsangYong has confirmed UK prices and specifications for its first all-electric model, the Korando e-Motion SUV.

The brand has not yet commenced the opening of orders and the SsangYong UK website is still asking prospective customers to register their interest. However, SsangYong’s latest UK price list contains full prices and equipment for the new model, suggesting that it is due on sale imminently.

Prices will start from £30,495 for the base model ELX variant after the £1,500 Plug-in car grant is taken into consideration. SsangYong offers two more versions, priced from £34,995 for the mid-spec Ventura and £37,995 for the range-topping Ultimate.

The base ELX spec comes as standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rearview camera, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, smart high beam etc.

In the mid-spec Ventura, you will find all the gadgets found in the base model but with a few extras such as dual fabric and faux leather seats, a leather steering wheel, a nine-inch infotainment screen, built-in TomTom navigation, and rear parking sensors.

At the top of the range is the Ultimate, which has everything you would find in the other models along with a full-leather interior, heated and ventilated power-adjustable leather seats, a heat pump, power tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, a wireless phone charger, rear privacy glass, and an electro-chromatic rearview mirror.

The adoption of electric power doesn’t result in a large redesign over petrol and diesel versions of the Korando, with the bodywork kept largely the same. It adopts some trademark EV design elements though, such as a more aerodynamic blanked-off grille with a new front bumper and fog light arrangement, aerodynamic wheels and new blue trim detailing around the car’s exterior to highlight its electric credentials.

Previously, SsangYong confirmed that the Korando e-Motion would be powered by a single electric motor producing 187bhp – or 26bhp more than the turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine fitted to the crossover’s current flagship model.

The battery powering the Korando e-motion will have a capacity of 61.5kWh, SsangYong says that is enough for a range of more than 260 miles on the outdated NEDC testing cycle.

While the range figure is a little down on the 339-mile NEDC range claimed by the Hyundai Kona Electric, the battery should still allow for a real-world range of over 200 miles. The only official certification of the car’s capabilities comes from Korea, where it is rated at 306km (190 miles) under Korea Energy Management Corporation homologation.

The firm says that production of the Korando e-Motion has already begun, and has also revealed it has begun work on its next all-electric model: a mid-size electric SUV codenamed J100.
